DESCRIPTION:TREE TALK – AUTUMN 2023 \nFREE TREES OCTOBER 7 ! \nIn celebration of Arbor Day\, The Burton Village Tree Commission will once again be giving away 200 seedlings! Join us at the southeast corner of the park on Saturday October 7\nfrom 10 – noon to claim your tree. This year’s pick is American native Bald Cypress\, Taxodium disticum\, a deciduous conifer. It’s a cone-bearing tree that sheds its feathery leaves\nin the fall. Before they drop\, the green leaves turn a handsome coppery-bronze.  Hardy to zone 4\, Bald Cypress is often associated with the swamps of the south where it\nis well known for the “knees” that protrude from its root system. This feature not well understood and is usually absent in dryer planting sites\, but Taxodium is a great choice for\nwetter sites where other trees may struggle or fail. Give this tree room as it can grow to 70 feet tall by 25 feet wide to become an uncommon stately specimen tree.
